Gynecomastia is very common and occurs in up to 60% of men at some point in their lifetime. This procedure has a very high satisfaction rate and can often be performed through one or two small incisions.

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia, or male breast enlargement, is a condition where men experience excess breast tissue in one or both breasts. This glandular breast tissue can feel very similar to a female breast because of its development, although gynecomastia can also be the result of excess fat. These enlarged breasts can cause significant emotional discomfort, especially in situations where it's acceptable to go without a shirt. Gynecomastia is not a form of breast cancer, but men with gynecomastia may be at a higher risk of male breast cancer. Male breasts may also be a symptom of serious medical conditions such as prostate cancer, a pituitary gland tumor, or testicular tumors, meaning it's important to work with a knowledgeable plastic surgeon. Gynecomastia surgery, or male breast reduction, is an effective way of treating gynecomastia.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

Male breast development can have many different causes. It's very common during puberty because of hormone changes, with most men experiencing pubertal gynecomastia at some point before it subsides. However, for some men, it persists into adulthood. Some men can develop gynecomastia from certain medications such as anabolic steroids or tricyclic antidepressants, while others may develop them because of underlying medical conditions like hormonal imbalances (high estrogen levels or low testosterone levels). In some cases, it may not be necessary to treat gynecomastia as it may subside on its own. In other cases, surgical treatment for gynecomastia is recommended. Our team will review your medical history to determine any possible causes associated with gynecomastia and whether you can see results by adjusting your lifestyle or medications.

What's Involved in Gynaecomastia Treatment?

Gynecomastia surgery is designed to remove excess breast tissue in men. Our team will assess your chest with a physical exam during a consultation to determine the best medical treatment. This also helps us create a surgical approach, accounting for factors like breast size and the presence of any excess skin.

For gynecomastia surgery, Dr. Mike typically uses SAFElipo to break up the glandular tissue so he can remove it through narrow cannulas. Sometimes in gynecomastia surgery, a small incision is made under the areola that helps in removing a very firm gland. For patients with a lot of excess skin, sometimes a skin excision is needed with the gynecomastia surgery.  Browse through our collection of gynecomastia before and after photos below.

FAQs about Gynecomastia

Is gynecomastia surgery painful?

Absolutely not! Before Dr. Frederick ever makes an incision, he will administer local anesthesia to the area that will last long after the procedure finishes. The procedure can be done awake or asleep and we will ensure you are completely comfortable.

Who is a good candidate for gynecomastia surgery?

Good candidates for gynecomastia are typically anyone who is struggling with excess male breast tissue. On top of that, you should also be in good overall health, have realistic expectations and not have any medical conditions that could negatively affect the surgical and recovery process.

What should I avoid after gynecomastia surgery?

After your gynecomastia surgery, there are a few different activities and things you’ll want to avoid to ensure proper healing and optimal results. You will want to stay away from strenuous activities and heavy lifting, submerging your incisions in water, and blood thinners.

Will there be scarring after gynecomastia surgery?

The scarring is very minimal with gyncomastia surgery. It can be done completely through a small liposuction incision that is 5mm or, if you have a firm gland, can be done with an incision hidden along the border of the areola.

How long does gynecomastia surgery take?

How long your gynecomastia surgery takes will depend on how complex your procedure is and how much tissue is removed. That said, on average, the procedure can take about one to two hours.
