What is Top Surgery?
Top surgery, also called gender-affirming surgery, FtM top surgery, or MtF surgery, is a major surgery that removes or changes the breast tissue and reshapes the nipples and chest to create a more masculine or feminine appearance for transgender and nonbinary people.
Research has found that gender-affirming surgery can have a positive impact on their well-being. Top surgery includes several options, including breast reduction, breast augmentation, and removal of excess skin.
Who is a Good Candidate for Gender-Affirming Surgery?
Most patients who are struggling with their gender identity, experiencing gender dysphoria, and want their body to match their gender are good candidates for top surgery.
You should also be in good overall health, have realistic expectations of treatment, be a nonsmoker, and be willing to follow aftercare instructions to ensure proper healing and recovery after the reconstructive surgery.
Gender Affirmation Surgery Recovery Process
After your top surgery, you will have some bruising and swelling. This is completely normal and will dissipate as you heal. To start your initial recovery, you'll want to avoid strenuous exercises and rest as much as possible. Dr. Frederick will also give you prescribed pain medications to ensure you're comfortable as you heal. You'll also want to avoid smoking and alcohol use and follow the aftercare instructions you receive. You'll want to take 1-2 weeks off work, but full recovery can take 6-8 weeks. At that point, you will likely be able to return to your normal activities.
