About Breast Reduction

While much of plastic surgery is focused on endowing fuller breasts, many women of all ages are interested in quite the opposite. Some women inherit a bustline that they might not have chosen; other women find themselves with a new set of struggles as time passes. Estrogen and progesterone play important roles in breast growth. During puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, these hormones’ levels fluctuate, causing breast tissue to do the same. The passing years bring many changes, and not all of them are graceful. Research has shown that 70% of older women are dissatisfied with how their breasts changed over time.[1] But, breast dissatisfaction doesn’t only happen later in life. Upon completing puberty, many young women find themselves with breasts that feel unmanageable. Regardless of age, breast reduction is an investment in the future. This surgery effectively addresses the excess glandular tissue, fatty tissue, and lax skin that contribute to the large breasts that so many women find discouraging.

Dr. Frederick can carefully remove the necessary excess tissue from the breasts to sculpt a beautiful pair of breasts that allows women to continue their lives feeling confident and content.

Benefits of Breast Reduction Surgery

There are many benefits that come with breast reduction surgery. Women who have received a breast reduction can enjoy three distinct advantages.

TREATS CHRONIC PAIN

Chronic shoulder, neck, and back pain commonly affect patients with large breasts.[2] Oversized breasts can put pressure on the neck, back, and shoulders and cause strain as the muscles in these areas are forced to overcompensate to support the weight. For many, this can cause also cause chronic joint pain and serious orthopedic problems that can worsen over time.

BETTER FITTING CLOTHES

Breasts that are too large can make wearing certain styles and outfits at best a bit awkward, and at worst, impossible. What’s in fashion is rarely realistic for all body types. But, while we might not miss skipping a certain trend or two, we still need to be able to wear the clothes that make everyday activities comfortable. Activewear, low-cut tops, and bathing suits are high risk for gals with large chests. But, so are button-down shirts! And, finding the bra to go underneath it all can be even more disheartening. When you’re not wrestling to get into a sports bra, stabbing underwires and pinching, abrasive bra straps make getting dressed a challenge, and many styles of lingerie simply out of the question. With a breast reduction, cumbersome curves are made manageable, so that you can express yourself with clothing you enjoy wearing, and only attract the kind of attention that makes you feel stylish and self-assured.

Achieve Lifted Volume and Symmetry

Breasts are naturally asymmetrical, but for women with large breasts, this can be especially pronounced. For many women, pregnancy can alter their breasts in very unexpected ways. Breasts swell to a larger size during pregnancy because the mammary glands are actively lactating, even before the baby arrives. Once a woman has finished nursing, the breast tissue shrinks to a smaller size. However, this doesn’t always happen symmetrically, and new mothers can be left with uneven breasts as well as volume loss and excess skin. This also can have heartbreaking effects on the overall shape of the breast and the size and positions of the nipples and areolae. A breast reduction surgery can create symmetry, lift the breast mass to a higher position on the chest, and correct nipple-areolar complexes that have become overly enlarged.

Preparation

To properly prepare for your breast reduction, we ask you to follow these simple steps:

  • Designate a caregiver to drive you home and stay with you for at least the next 24 hours. We use general anesthesia during the surgery, and will not be fit to drive or perform other activities afterward.
  • Stop smoking or using other nicotine products. Nicotine constricts blood vessels and interferes with the body’s natural healing response.
  • Discontinue blood-thinning medications like Advil, ibuprofen, and fish oil as these can cause excessive bleeding during your procedure.
  • Pre-fill all prescriptions before the day of your surgery.
  • Organize an area in your home for comfortable recuperation

Personal Consultation

If this is your first time at Le Spa, we will begin with a new patient intake interview and a physical exam. This step is brief and helps us learn about your desired results as well as your health and well-being. We will note specifics about your current breast size and take your measurements. Dr. Frederick will then examine your breast tissue and determine if you’re a good candidate for breast reduction surgery. If a breast reduction surgery will effectively meet your needs, he will construct a personalized treatment plan to address each of your cosmetic concerns. Before leaving our care, we will give you a list of preparatory steps to follow between your consultation and your surgery.

Breast Reduction Procedure

On the day of your procedure, we will begin by administering the appropriate anesthesia. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, Dr. Frederick will make a circular incision around the nipple. Then, he will make a vertical incision from the bottom of the areola down the center of the lower part of the breast. An additional incision is made horizontally along the inframammary crease, where the bottom of the breast meets the chest. From here, he will be able to expertly resize the breast by removing the appropriate amount of tissue adjacent to these incisions. Once he has completed one breast, he will suture the incisions closed, creating adequate tension to lift and firm the breast. He will then repeat the process on the other breast, eliminating any existing asymmetry. At the end of the procedure, you will have breasts that are not only firm, lifted, and even, but also in line with your ideal size!

Recovery After a Breast Reduction

At the end of your procedure, we will wrap your chest in a compression garment. This garment keeps adequate pressure on the tissue to help the healing process along. We will prescribe medicine to manage discomfort. For the next couple of days, take this medication rather than OTC pain medicine, as those will thin the blood and can increase the risk of bleeding. Also, we ask that you sleep on your back or side so as to not disturb the healing incisions. You’ll need to avoid any strenuous activity for at least the next six weeks, and continue to wear a support bra as you heal. You’ll receive detailed instructions so that you can properly care for your incisions, and know what to expect for each phase of your recovery.

Results of Your Breast Reduction Surgery

Many of our patients see their swelling and bruising reduce significantly after two weeks. This is when they begin noticing their new, remarkable results. Final results will become visible over the coming months, as the swelling eventually subsides completely. After a reduction procedure, breasts appear firmer, more even, and sit higher on their chest.  To learn more about previous patients’ experiences, please visit our reviews page!
